may you hear from heaven your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigners ask of you, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built.


When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more;


these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.


Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things


Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord.


because they have perpetrated outrage in Israel and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken in my name lying words that I did not command them; I am the one who knows and bears witness, says the Lord.


and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are safe!”—only to go on doing all these abominations?


And you magnified yourselves against me with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it.


Incline your ear, O my God, and hear. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and the city that bears your name. We do not present our supplication before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.


He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a den of robbers.”


He was teaching and saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”


He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!”


And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.
