All the leading priests and the people also were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord that he had consecrated in Jerusalem.


You shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the officials, and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


The wicked accept a concealed bribe to pervert the ways of justice.


To be a partner of a thief is to hate one's own life; one hears the victim's curse, but discloses nothing.


learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.


Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.


Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water.


Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.


The Lord enters into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: It is you who have devoured the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.


Oh, rebellious children, says the Lord, who carry out a plan, but not mine; who make an alliance, but against my will, adding sin to sin;


Those who walk righteously and speak uprightly, who despise the gain of oppression, who wave away a bribe instead of accepting it, who stop their ears from hearing of bloodshed and shut their eyes from looking on evil,


who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of their rights!


I held out my hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices;


But your eyes and heart are only on your dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence.


because of all the evil of the people of Israel and the people of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger—they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets, the citizens of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.


They have closed in around her like watchers of a field, because she has rebelled against me, says the Lord.

Every evil of theirs began at Gilgal; there I came to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their officials are rebels.


For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate.


Its rulers give judgment for a bribe, its priests teach for a price, its prophets give oracles for money; yet they lean upon the Lord and say, “Surely the Lord is with us! No harm shall come upon us.”


Hear this, you rulers of the house of Jacob and chiefs of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity,


Your wealthy are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, with tongues of deceit in their mouths.


Their hands are skilled to do evil; the official and the judge ask for a bribe, and the powerful dictate what they desire; thus they pervert justice.


do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.


Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.


So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and gave him Balak's message.


He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a den of robbers.”


He was teaching and saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.


You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept bribes, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.


Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.


Yet his sons did not follow in his ways, but turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice.
