And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, by the observance of which a person shall live. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey.


I gave them my statutes and showed them my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live.


But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not observe my statutes but rejected my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live; and my sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make an end of them.


You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances; by doing so one shall live: I am the Lord.


And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”


But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.


If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.


For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us,


and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.
