And he said to the human race, ‘The fear of the Lord – that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.’


Rulers persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at your word.


I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.


Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.


Many are saying of me, ‘God will not deliver him.’


I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.


Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him.


He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’


On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.


I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked:


The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives.


Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided.


Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.


Should you not fear me?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it.


The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.


Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?
