While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, to come from Giloh, his home town. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.


Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.


Vindicate me, Lord, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.


Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.


‘Sacrifice thank-offerings to God, fulfil your vows to the Most High,


Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.


Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.


‘Will the Lord reject for ever? Will he never show his favour again?


Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.


‘For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them.


When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?’ says the Lord Almighty.


‘Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,


They will summon peoples to the mountain and there offer the sacrifices of the righteous; they will feast on the abundance of the seas, on the treasures hidden in the sand.’


So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
