Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. ‘This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants.


‘ “If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonoured his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.


‘ “The priests are to perform my service in such a way that they do not become guilty and die for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.


But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain. I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.’


Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.’


Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, towards the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
