Numbers 18:23 - New International Version (Anglicised)

23 It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offences they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. They will receive no inheritance among the Israelites.

In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law, Aaron and his sons are to keep the lamps burning before the Lord from evening till morning. This is to be a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for the generations to come.


‘ “The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.


The Lord said to Aaron, ‘You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offences connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offences connected with the priesthood.


The Lord said to Aaron, ‘You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.


This is a lasting ordinance for them. ‘The man who sprinkles the water of cleansing must also wash his clothes, and anyone who touches the water of cleansing will be unclean till evening.


All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.


They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle.


‘ “This is to have the force of law for you throughout the generations to come, wherever you live.


That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, as the Lord your God told them.)


But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.
