For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.

The Pharisees said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?’
They said to him, ‘John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.’
So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.
