‘Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.


for six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it is to be put to death.


‘If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honourable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,


and a man with a shrivelled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’


He answered, ‘Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?


The Pharisees said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?’


Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’


Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.


Some of the Pharisees asked, ‘Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?’
