One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’
For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.’
A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’
But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptised by John.)
They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.
