So David and his men went by the way; and Shim`i went along on the hillside over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.


When king David came to Bachurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Sha'ul came out, whose name was Shim`i, the son of Gera. He came out, and cursed still as he came.


Then said Avishai the son of Tzeru'yah to the king, *Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please let me go over and take off his head.*


Behold, God our shield, look at the face of your anointed.


*You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people.


The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.


He said to his men, the LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD's anointed.


David said to Avishai, Don't destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?
