The Pharisee said, “Teacher, which command in the law is the most important?”

This is the first and most important command.

And a person must love God with all his heart, all his mind, and all his strength. And a person must love other people the same as he loves himself. These commands are more important than all the animals and sacrifices we offer to God.”

The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God. You must love him with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ {\cf2\super [192]} Also, ‘You must love other people the same as you love yourself.’ {\cf2\super [193]} ”

Why is this true? Because if a person’s thinking is controlled by his sinful self, then that person is against God. That person refuses to obey God’s law. And really that person is not able to obey God’s law.

“Now, people of Israel, listen! What does the Lord your God really want from you? The Lord wants you to respect him and do what he says. God wants you to love him and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

The Lord your God will make you and your descendants want to obey him. [198] Then you will love the Lord with all your heart. And you will live!

“Listen, people of Israel! The Lord is our God. The Lord is one!

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

And he (God) gave us this command: The person who loves God must also love his brothers and sisters \{in Christ\}.
