Then King Rehoboam talked with the older men who had served his father Solomon in the past. Rehoboam said to them, “What do you advise me to say to those people?”


\{We say,\}\par ‘Wisdom is to be found in old people.\par Long life brings understanding.’\par


\{Job said,\} “I have seen all this before. I have already heard everything you say. I understand all of those things.


The gray-haired men\par and the old people agree with us.\par Yes, even people older than your father\par are on our side.\par


I will tell you the things\par wise men have told me.\par The wise men’s ancestors {\cf2\super [27]} \par told them these things.\par They didn’t hide any secrets from me.\par


God, we have heard about you.\par Our fathers told us what you did\par in their lifetime.\par They told us what you did long ago.\par


People that are alive—\par like me today—\par are the people that praise you.\par A father should tell his children\par that you can be trusted.\par


Leaders, listen to this message!\par Listen to me, all you people\par that live in the land.\par Has anything like this happened before\par during your lifetime? No!\par Did anything like this happen\par during your fathers’ lifetime? No!\par


Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. Those things were written so that we could have hope. That hope comes from the patience and strength that the Scriptures give us.


The things that happened to those people are examples. And those things were written to be warnings for us. We live in the time that all those past histories were pointing to.


“Remember what happened long ago. Think about the things that happened many, many years ago. Ask your father; he will tell you. Ask your leaders; they will tell you.


“Has anything this great ever happened before? Never! Look at the past. Think about all the things that happened before you were born. Go all the way back to the time when God made people on the earth. Look at all the things that have happened anywhere in the world. Has anyone ever heard about anything as great as this? No!
