The Lord instructed Moses, ‘Go down and warn the people not to break through to see the Lord; otherwise many of them will die.
Moses responded to the Lord, ‘The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, since you warned us: Put a boundary around the mountain and consecrate it.’
Moses alone is to approach the Lord, but the others are not to approach, and the people are not to go up with him.’
Be careful not to make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land that you are going to enter; otherwise, they will become a snare among you.
No one may go up with you; in fact, no one should be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even the flocks and herds are not to graze in front of that mountain.’
Command the people: You are about to travel through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so be very careful.
‘Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.
For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm,
But keep a distance of about a kilometre between yourselves and the ark. Don’t go near it, so that you can see the way to go, for you haven’t travelled this way before.’
