from the nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, ‘You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods.’  To these women Solomon was deeply attached  in love.


They set up for themselves sacred pillars  and Asherah poles  on every high hill and under every green tree.


and they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and served the Asherah poles and the idols.  So there was wrath  against Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.


you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you, destroy all their stone images  and cast images,  and demolish all their high places.


so that they won’t teach you to do all the detestable acts they do for their gods, and you sin against the Lord your God.


The Lord will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you.


You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God is delivering over to you and not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.


and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you and you defeat them, you must completely destroy  them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.


The men of Israel replied to the Hivites, ‘Perhaps you live among us. How can we make a treaty with you? ’


I said to you: I am the Lord your God. Do not fear the gods of the Amorites whose land you live in.  But you did not obey me.” ’


Gideon made an ephod  from all this and put it in Ophrah, his home town. Then all Israel prostituted themselves by worshipping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.
