Then the court secretary Shaphan told the king, ‘The priest Hilkiah has given me a book,’ and Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.


You pore over the Scriptures   because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.


‘Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol  on your foreheads.


The day you stood before the Lord your God  at Horeb, the Lord said to me, “Assemble the people before me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me  all the days they live on the earth and may instruct their children.”


‘Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves,  so that you don’t forget  the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind  as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.


Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, ‘Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.


This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth;  you are to meditate on  it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.
