And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.


And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me as far as Beth-el. And Elisha said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el.


So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spake.


but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.\par


Even young children despise me;\par\tab If I arise, they speak against me.


But now they that are younger than I have me in derision,\par\tab Whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.


Let me not be put to shame, O Jehovah; for I have called upon thee:\par\tab Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol.

Even a child maketh himself known by his doings,\par\tab Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.


Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;\par\tab {\i But} the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.


Train up a child in the way he should go,\par\tab And even when he is old he will not depart from it.


Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.\par


Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil-doers, children that deal corruptly! they have forsaken Jehovah, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are estranged {\i and gone} backward.


And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbor: the child shall behave himself proudly against the old man, and the base against the honorable.


O Jehovah, thou hast persuaded me, and I was persuaded; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock all the day, every one mocketh me.


For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and destruction! because the word of Jehovah is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day.


The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.


So shall Beth-el do unto you because of your great wickedness: at daybreak shall the king of Israel be utterly cut off.\par


The inhabitants of Samaria shall be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced over it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.


Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah liveth.


And if a man's hair be fallen off his head, he is bald; yet is he clean.


For in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also visit the altars of Beth-el; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.


Come to Beth-el, and transgress; to Gilgal, {\i and} multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, {\i and} your tithes every three days;


but seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought.


but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.\par


But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him {\i that was born} after the Spirit, so also it is now.
