For the LORDhad saidof them, "They shall surelydiein the wilderness."And not a manwas leftof them, exceptCalebthe sonof Jephunnehand Joshuathe sonof Nun.
For evildoerswill be cutoff,But those who waitfor the LORD,they will inheritthe land.
Now the sonsof Israeljourneyedfrom Ramesesto Succoth,about sixhundredthousandmenon foot,asidefrom children.
The LORDspoketo Mosesand Aaron,saying,
But as for you, your corpseswill fallin thiswilderness.
I, the LORD,have spoken,surelythisI will doto allthisevilcongregationwho are gatheredtogether againstMe. In thiswildernessthey shall be destroyed,and therethey will die.'"
But Joshuathe sonof Nunand Calebthe sonof Jephunnehremainedaliveout of thosemenwho wentto spyout the land.
"Our fatherdiedin the wilderness,yet he was not amongthe companyof those who gatheredthemselves together againstthe LORDin the companyof Korah;but he diedin his own sin,and he hadnosons.
"Theseare the namesof the men:of the tribeof Judah,Calebthe sonof Jephunneh.
Beholdthenthe kindnessand severityof God;to thosewho fell,severity,but to you, God'skindness,ifyou continuein His kindness;otherwiseyou alsowill be cut off.
exceptCalebthe sonof Jephunneh;he shall seeit, and to him and to his sonsI will givethe landon whichhe has setfoot,becausehe has followedthe LORDfully.'
Thisis the reasonwhyJoshuacircumcisedthem: allthe peoplewho cameout of Egyptwho were males,allthe menof war,diedin the wildernessalong the wayafter they cameout of Egypt.
NowI desireto remindyou, though you knowall thingsonce for all,that the Lord,after savinga peopleout of the landof Egypt,subsequentlydestroyedthosewho did not believe.
