In thosedaysI alsosawthat the Jewshad marriedwomenfrom Ashdod,Ammon[and] Moab.
Now KingSolomonlovedmanyforeignwomenalong with the daughterof Pharaoh:Moabite,Ammonite,Edomite,Sidonian,and Hittitewomen,
Then Ezrathe prieststoodup and saidto them, "You have beenunfaithfuland have marriedforeignwivesaddingto the guiltof Israel.
Allthesehad marriedforeignwives,and someof them hadwives[by whom] they hadchildren.
and that we will not giveour daughtersto the peoplesof the landor taketheir daughtersfor our sons.
As for the peoplesof the landwho bringwaresor anygrainon the sabbathdayto sell,we will not buyfrom them on the sabbathor a holyday;and we will forego[the crops] the seventhyearand the exactionof everydebt.
On that daythey readaloud from the bookof Mosesin the hearingof the people;and there was foundwrittenin it that noAmmoniteor Moabiteshould everenterthe assemblyof God,
As for their children,halfspokein the languageof Ashdod,and noneof them was ableto speakthe languageof Judah,but the languageof his ownpeople.
"Do we then hearabout you that you have committedallthisgreatevilby actingunfaithfullyagainst our Godby marryingforeignwomen?"
Now whenSanballat,Tobiah,the Arabs,the Ammonitesand the Ashdoditesheardthat the repairof the wallsof Jerusalemwenton, [and] that the breachesbeganto be closed,they were veryangry.
"Be sure to observewhatI am commandingyou this day:behold,I am going to driveout the Amoritebeforeyou, and the Canaanite,the Hittite,the Perizzite,the Hiviteand the Jebusite.
Do not be bound togetherwith unbelievers;for whatpartnershiphave righteousnessand lawlessness,orwhatfellowshiphas lightwith darkness?
"Whenthe LORDyour Godbringsyou into the landwhereyou are enteringto possessit, and clearsawaymanynationsbeforeyou, the Hittitesand the Girgashitesand the Amoritesand the Canaanitesand the Perizzitesand the Hivitesand the Jebusites,sevennationsgreaterand strongerthanyou,
They tookfor themselvesMoabitewomen[as] wives;the nameof the onewas Orpahand the nameof the otherRuth.And they livedthereabout tenyears.
Now the Philistinestookthe arkof Godand broughtit from Ebenezerto Ashdod.
