He calledthe nameof that placeBethel;however,previouslythe nameof the cityhad been Luz.
Zanoah,Adullam,and their villages,Lachishand its fields,Azekahand its towns.So they encampedfrom Beershebaas faras the valleyof Hinnom.
at Anathoth,Nob,Ananiah,
from Beth-gilgaland from [their] fieldsin Gebaand Azmaveth,for the singershad builtthemselves villagesaroundJerusalem.

From therethe bordercontinuedto Luz,to the sideof Luz(that is, Bethel)southward;and the borderwentdownto Ataroth-addar,nearthe hillwhich[lies] on the southof lowerBeth-horon.
and Beth-arabahand Zemaraimand Bethel,
and Chephar-ammoniand Ophniand Geba;twelvecitieswith their villages.
So Joshuasentthem away,and they wentto the place of ambushand remainedbetweenBetheland Ai,on the westsideof Ai;but Joshuaspentthat nightamongthe people.
But Samuelsaid,"Whathave you done?"And Saulsaid,"BecauseI sawthat the peoplewere scatteringfrom me, and that you did not comewithin the appointeddays,and that the Philistineswere assemblingat Michmash,
Now Saulchosefor himself 3,000men of Israel,of which 2,000were with Saulin Michmashand in the hillcountryof Bethel,while 1,000were with Jonathanat Gibeahof Benjamin.But he sentawaythe restof the people,eachto his tent.
And the garrisonof the Philistineswentout to the passof Michmash.
