for fortydays,being temptedby the devil.And He atenothingduringthosedays,and when they had ended,He became hungry.
And I will putenmityBetweenyou and the woman,And betweenyour seedand her seed;He shall bruiseyou on the head,And you shall bruisehim on the heel."
So he aroseand ateand drank,and wentin the strengthof that foodfortydaysand fortynightsto Horeb,the mountainof God.
"Go,assembleallthe Jewswho are foundin Susa,and fastfor me; do not eator drinkfor threedays,nightor day.I and my maidensalsowill fastin the sameway.And thusI will goin to the king,whichis not according to the law;and ifI perish,I perish."
Mosesenteredthe midstof the cloudas he wentup to the mountain;and Moseswas on the mountainfortydaysand fortynights.
So he was therewith the LORDfortydaysand fortynights;he did not eatbreador drinkwater.And he wroteon the tabletsthe wordsof the covenant,the TenCommandments.
He issueda proclamationand it said,"In Ninevehby the decreeof the kingand his nobles:Do not let man,beast,herd,or flocktastea thing.Do not let them eator drinkwater.
Nowin the morning,when He was returningto the city,He became hungry.
And after He had fastedfortydaysand fortynights,He thenbecame hungry.
And the devilsaidto Him, "IfYou are the Sonof God,tellthisstoneto becomebread."
and Jacob'swellwas there.SoJesus,being weariedfrom His journey,was sittingthusby the well.It was aboutthe sixthhour.
"I felldownbeforethe LORD,as at the first,fortydaysand nights;I neitheratebreadnordrankwater,becauseof allyour sinwhichyou had committedin doingwhatwas evilin the sightof the LORDto provokeHim to anger.
"So I felldownbeforethe LORDthe fortydaysand nights,whichI didbecausethe LORDhad saidHe would destroyyou.
"When I wentup to the mountainto receivethe tabletsof stone,the tabletsof the covenantwhichthe LORDhad madewith you, then I remainedon the mountainfortydaysand nights;I neitheratebreadnordrankwater.
For since He Himselfwas temptedin that whichHe has suffered,He is ableto come to the aidof thosewho are tempted.
For we do not havea high priestwhocannotsympathizewith our weaknesses,but One whohas been temptedin all thingsas [we are, yet] withoutsin.
The Philistinecameforwardmorningand eveningfor fortydaysand tookhis stand.
