As the crowdswere increasing,He beganto say,"Thisgenerationis a wickedgeneration;it seeksfor a sign,and [yet] nosignwill be givento it but the signof Jonah.
Thus Ezekielwill be a signto you; according to allthat he has doneyou will do;when it comes,then you will knowthat I am the LordGOD.'"
The wordof the LORDcameto Jonahthe sonof Amittaisaying,
But when he sawmanyof the Phariseesand Sadduceescomingfor baptism,he saidto them, "You broodof vipers,whowarnedyou to fleefrom the wrathto come?
"For whoeveris ashamedof Me and My wordsin thisadulterousand sinfulgeneration,the Sonof Manwill alsobe ashamedof him whenHe comesin the gloryof His Fatherwith the holyangels."
Others,to test[Him], were demandingof Him a signfrom heaven.
sothat the bloodof allthe prophets,shedsincethe foundationof the world,may be chargedagainstthisgeneration,
Underthesecircumstances,after so many thousandsof peoplehad gathered togetherthat they were steppingon one another,He begansayingto His disciplesfirst[of all, ]"Bewareof the leavenof the Pharisees,whichis hypocrisy.
And Jesusansweredand said,"You unbelievingand pervertedgeneration,how longshall I be with you and putup with you? Bringyour sonhere."
The Jewsthensaidto Him, "Whatsigndo You showus as your authority for doingthese things?"
Sothey saidto Him, "Whatthendo You dofor a sign,sothat we may see,and believeYou? Whatwork do You perform?
"You are of [your] fatherthe devil,and you wantto dothe desiresof your father.He was a murdererfrom the beginning,and does not standin the truthbecausethere is notruthin him. Wheneverhe speaksa lie,he speaksfrom his own[nature], for he is a liarand the fatherof lies.
