The Gileaditescapturedthe fordsof the Jordanopposite Ephraim.And it happenedwhen[any of] the fugitivesof Ephraimsaid,"Let me crossover,"the menof Gileadwould sayto him, "Are you an Ephraimite?"If he said,"No,"
Then Jeroboamthe sonof Nebat,an Ephraimiteof Zeredah,Solomon'sservant,whose mother'snamewas Zeruah,a widow,also rebelledagainst the king.
So the menpursuedthem on the roadto the Jordanto the fords;and as soonas those who were pursuingthem had goneout, they shutthe gate.
And the sonsof Israelheard[it] said,"Behold,the sonsof Reubenand the sonsof Gadand the half-tribeof Manassehhave builtan altarat the frontierof the landof Canaan,in the regionof the Jordan,on the side[belonging to] the sonsof Israel."
Then Jephthahgatheredallthe menof Gileadand foughtEphraim;and the menof GileaddefeatedEphraim,becausethey said,"You are fugitivesof Ephraim,O Gileadites,in the midstof Ephraim[and] in the midstof Manasseh."
then they would sayto him, "Saynow,'Shibboleth.'"But he said,"Sibboleth,"for he couldnot pronounceit correctly.Then they seizedhim and slewhim at the fordsof the Jordan.Thus there fellat that time42000of Ephraim.
Now there was a youngmanfrom Bethlehemin Judah,of the familyof Judah,whowas a Levite;and he was stayingthere.
He saidto them, "Pursue[them], for the LORDhas givenyour enemiesthe Moabitesinto your hands."So they wentdownafterhim and seizedthe fordsof the Jordanopposite Moab,and did not allowanyoneto cross.
Gideonsentmessengersthroughoutallthe hillcountryof Ephraim,saying,"ComedownagainstMidianand takethe watersbefore them, as faras Beth-barahand the Jordan."So allthe menof Ephraimwere summonedand they tookthe watersas faras Beth-barahand the Jordan.
Now therewas a certainmanfrom Ramathaim-zophimfrom the hillcountryof Ephraim,and his namewas Elkanahthe sonof Jeroham,the sonof Elihu,the sonof Tohu,the sonof Zuph,an Ephraimite.
