Sothe Jewswere saying,"SurelyHe will not killHimself, will He, sinceHe says,WhereI am going, you cannotcome'?"
Our soulis greatlyfilledWith the scoffingof those whoare at ease,[And] with the contemptof the proud.
But I am a wormand not a man,A reproachof menand despisedby the people.
Let the lyinglipsbe mute,Which speakarrogantlyagainstthe righteousWith prideand contempt.
Thisis the testimonyof John, whenthe Jewssentto him priestsand Levitesfrom Jerusalemto askhim, "Whoare you?"
Manyof them were saying,"He hasa demonand is insane.Whydo you listento Him?"
The crowdanswered,"You havea demon!Whoseeksto killYou?"
The Jewsthensaidto one another,"Wheredoes this manintendto gothat we will not findHim? He is not intendingto goto the Dispersionamong the Greeks, and teachthe Greeks,is He?
The Jewsansweredand saidto Him, "Do we not sayrightlythat You are a Samaritanand havea demon?"
The Jewssaidto Him, "Nowwe knowthat You havea demon.Abrahamdied, and the prophets[also]; and You say,'IfanyonekeepsMy word,he will nevertasteof death.'
For considerHim who has enduredsuchhostilityby sinnersagainstHimself, sothat you will not grow wearyand loseheart.
So,let us goout to Him outsidethe camp, bearingHis reproach.
