Yet he saidto them, "No,but you have cometo lookat the undefendedpartsof our land!"
Josephsaidto them, "It is as I saidto you, you are spies;
"Sendoneof you that he may getyour brother,while you remain confined,that your wordsmay be tested,whether there is truthin you. But ifnot, by the lifeof Pharaoh,surelyyou are spies."
and bringyour youngestbrotherto me, so your wordsmay be verified,and you will not die."And they didso.
"The man,the lordof the land,spokeharshlywith us, and tookus for spiesof the country.
But bringyour youngestbrotherto me that I may knowthat you are not spies,but honestmen.I will giveyour brotherto you, and you may tradein the land.'"
When Josephsawhis brothershe recognizedthem, but he disguisedhimself to them and spoketo them harshly.And he saidto them, "Wherehave you comefrom?" And they said,"From the landof Canaan,to buyfood."
Judahspoketo him, however, saying,"The mansolemnlywarnedus, 'You shall not seemy faceunlessyour brotheris with you.'
"But ifyou do not send[him], we will not godown;for the mansaidto us, 'You will not seemy faceunlessyour brotheris with you.'"
"And althoughthey say,'As the LORDlives,'Surelythey swearfalsely."
"Whyshould I pardonyou? Your sonshave forsakenMe And swornby those who are not gods.When I had fedthem to the full,They committedadulteryAnd troopedto the harlot'shouse.
"You shall fear[only] the LORDyour God;and you shall worshipHim and swearby His name.
But aboveall,my brethren,do not swear,eitherby heavenorby earthorwith anyotheroath;but your yesis to be yes,and your no,no,sothat you may not fallunderjudgment.
She said,"Oh,my lord!As your soullives,my lord,I am the womanwho stoodherebesideyou, prayingto the LORD.
Now when SaulsawDavidgoingout againstthe Philistine,he saidto Abnerthe commanderof the army,"Abner,whosesonis thisyoungman?"And Abnersaid,"By your life,O king,I do not know."
Yet Davidvowedagain,saying,"Your fatherknowswellthat I have foundfavorin your sight,and he has said,'Do not let Jonathanknowthis,orhe will be grieved.'But trulyas the LORDlivesand as your soullives,there is hardly a stepbetweenme and death."
