He said,"Your nameshall nolongerbe Jacob,but Israel;for you have strivenwith Godand with menand have prevailed."
Then Godsaidto Abraham,"As for Saraiyour wife,you shall not callher nameSarai,but Sarah[shall be] her name.
"Nolongershall your namebe calledAbram,But your nameshall be Abraham;For I will makeyou the fatherof a multitudeof nations.
But Jacobsaid,"Firstsellme your birthright."
Godcameto Labanthe Arameanin a dreamof the nightand saidto him, "Be carefulthat you do not speakto Jacobeithergoodorbad."
Then Jacobwas leftalone,and a manwrestledwith him untildaybreak.
So he saidto him, "Whatis your name?"And he said,"Jacob."
Then he erectedtherean altarand calledit El-Elohe-Israel.
Then Esauranto meethim and embracedhim, and fellon his neckand kissedhim, and they wept.
Godsaidto him, "Your nameis Jacob;You shall nolongerbe calledJacob,But Israelshall be your name."Thus He calledhim Israel.
and sent[word] throughNathanthe prophet,and he namedhim Jedidiahfor the LORD'Ssake.
Elijahtooktwelvestonesaccording to the numberof the tribesof the sonsof Jacob,to whomthe wordof the LORDhad come,saying,"Israelshall be your name."
To thisdaythey doaccording to the earliercustoms:they do not fearthe LORD,nordo they followtheir statutesor their ordinancesor the law,or the commandmentswhichthe LORDcommandedthe sonsof Jacob,whomHe namedIsrael;
Abrahambecamethe fatherof Isaac.The sonsof Isaac[were] Esauand Israel.
When a man'swaysare pleasingto the LORD,He makesevenhis enemiesto be at peacewith him.
But now,thussaysthe LORD,your Creator,O Jacob,And He who formedyou, O Israel,"Do not fear,for I have redeemedyou; I have calledyou by name;you are Mine!
"You will leaveyour namefor a curseto My chosenones,And the LordGODwill slayyou. But My servantswill be calledby anothername.
Theseare the namesof the menwhomMosessentto spyout the land;but MosescalledHosheathe sonof Nun,Joshua.
He broughthim to Jesus.Jesuslookedat him and said,"You are Simonthe sonof John;you shall be calledCephas"(whichis translatedPeter).
He who hasan ear,let him hearwhatthe Spiritsaysto the churches.To him who overcomes,to him I will give[some] of the hiddenmanna,and I will givehim a whitestone,and a newnamewrittenon the stonewhichno oneknowsbut he who receivesit.'
Then Saulsaidto David,"Blessedare you, my sonDavid;you will bothaccomplishmuchand surelyprevail."So Davidwenton his way,and Saulreturnedto his place.
