So Saraisaidto Abram,"Nowbehold,the LORDhas preventedme from bearing[children]. Pleasegoin to my maid;perhapsI will obtainchildrenthroughher." And Abramlistenedto the voiceof Sarai.
Saraiwas barren;she hadnochild.
"I will blessher, and indeedI will giveyou a sonby her. Then I will blessher, and she shall be [a mother of] nations;kingsof peopleswill comefrom her."
He said,"I will surelyreturnto you at this timenextyear;and behold,Sarahyour wifewill have a son."And Sarahwas listeningat the tentdoor,whichwas behindhim.
Then the firstbornsaidto the younger,"Our fatheris old,and thereis not a manon earthto comein to us after the mannerof the earth.
For the LORDhad closedfastallthe wombsof the householdof Abimelechbecauseof Sarah,Abraham'swife.
Isaacprayedto the LORDon behalfof his wife,becauseshe was barren;and the LORDansweredhim and Rebekahhis wifeconceived.
The mansaid,"The womanwhomYou gave[to be] with me, she gaveme from the tree,and I ate."
Then to AdamHe said,"Becauseyou have listenedto the voiceof your wife,and have eatenfrom the treeabout whichI commandedyou, saying,'You shall not eatfrom it'; Cursedis the groundbecauseof you; In toilyou will eatof it Allthe daysof your life.
Then GodrememberedRachel,and Godgaveheedto her and openedher womb.
Then Rachelsaid,"Godhas vindicatedme, and has indeedheardmy voiceand has givenme a son."Thereforeshe namedhim Dan.
Behold,childrenare a giftof the LORD,The fruitof the wombis a reward.
"Ifhis mastergiveshim a wife,and she bearshim sonsordaughters,the wifeand her childrenshall belongto her master,and he shall goout alone.
Allthe peoplewhowere in the court,and the elders,said,"[We are] witnesses.May the LORDmakethe womanwho is cominginto your homelike Racheland Leah,bothof whombuiltthe houseof Israel;and may you achievewealthin Ephrathahand becomefamousin Bethlehem.
