the commanderorderedhim to be broughtinto the barracks,statingthat he should be examinedby scourgingsothat he might findout the reasonwhythey were shoutingagainst him that way.
PilatethentookJesusand scourgedHim.
But Paulsaidto them, "They have beatenus in publicwithout trial,menwho are Romans,and have thrownus into prison;and noware they sending us awaysecretly?Noindeed!But let them comethemselvesand bringus out."
But amongthe crowdsomewere shoutingone thing [and] some another,and when he couldnot findout the factsbecauseof the uproar,he orderedhim to be broughtinto the barracks.
As Paulwas aboutto be broughtinto the barracks,he saidto the commander,"MayI saysomethingto you?" And he said,"Do you knowGreek?
And as a greatdissensionwas developing,the commanderwas afraidPaulwould be torn to piecesby them and orderedthe troopsto go downand take him away from them by force,and bringhim into the barracks.
"When thismanwas arrestedby the Jewsand was aboutto be slainby them, I cameup to them with the troopsand rescuedhim, having learnedthat he was a Roman.
"And when they had examinedme, they were willingto releaseme becausethere was nogroundfor putting me to death.
Womenreceived[back] their deadby resurrection;and otherswere tortured,not acceptingtheir release,sothat they might obtaina betterresurrection;
