Now it cameabout afterthe deathof Saul,when Davidhad returnedfrom the slaughterof the Amalekites,that Davidremainedtwodaysin Ziklag.
They mournedand weptand fasteduntileveningfor Sauland his sonJonathanand for the peopleof the LORDand the houseof Israel,becausethey had fallenby the sword.
Thus Sauldiedwith his threesons,and all[those] of his housediedtogether.
Then he calledquicklyto the youngman,his armorbearer,and saidto him, "Drawyour swordand killme, sothat it will not be saidof me, 'A womanslewhim.'" So the youngmanpiercedhim through,and he died.
So allthe peoplewentto Gilgal,and therethey madeSaulkingbeforethe LORDin Gilgal.Therethey also offeredsacrificesof peaceofferingsbeforethe LORD;and thereSauland allthe menof Israelrejoicedgreatly.
"Is it not the wheatharvesttoday?I will callto the LORD,that He may sendthunderand rain.Then you will knowand seethat your wickednessis greatwhichyou have donein the sightof the LORDby askingfor yourselves a king."
"But ifyou stilldowickedly,bothyou and your kingwill be sweptaway."
Davidalso said,"As the LORDlives,surelythe LORDwill strikehim, orhis daywill comethat he dies,orhe will godowninto battleand perish.
"Moreover the LORDwill alsogiveover Israelalongwith you into the handsof the Philistines,therefore tomorrowyou and your sonswill be with me. Indeedthe LORDwill giveover the armyof Israelinto the handsof the Philistines!"
When his armorbearersawthat Saulwas dead,he alsofellon his swordand diedwith him.
When the menof Israelwhowere on the othersideof the valley,with those whowere beyondthe Jordan,sawthat the menof Israelhad fledand that Sauland his sonswere dead,they abandonedthe citiesand fled;then the Philistinescameand livedin them.
