Then Saulbecameveryangry,for thissayingdispleasedhim; and he said,"They have ascribedto Davidtenthousands,but to me they have ascribedthousands.Now what morecan he have but the kingdom?"
His brotherswere jealousof him, but his fatherkeptthe saying[in mind].
Then his brotherssaidto him, "Are you actuallygoing to reignoverus? Orare you reallygoing to ruleover us?" So they hatedhim evenmorefor his dreamsand for his words.
KingSolomonansweredand saidto his mother,"And whyare you askingAbishagthe Shunammitefor Adonijah?Askfor him also the kingdom--for he is my olderbrother--even for him, for Abiatharthe priest,and for Joabthe sonof Zeruiah!"
When Hamansawthat Mordecaineitherboweddownnorpaidhomageto him, Hamanwas filledwith rage.
Through insolencecomesnothingbut strife,But wisdomis with those who receivecounsel.
Wrathis fierceand angeris a flood,But whocan standbeforejealousy?
I have seenthat everylaborand everyskillwhich is doneis [the result of] rivalrybetween a manand his neighbor.Thistoois vanityand strivingafter wind.
Now the peoplebecamelike those who complainof adversityin the hearingof the LORD;and when the LORDheard[it], His angerwas kindled,and the fireof the LORDburnedamong them and consumed[some] of the outskirtsof the camp.
Balaamsaidto the angelof the LORD,"I have sinned,for I did not knowthat you were standingin the wayagainstme. Nowthen, ifit is displeasingto you, I will turnback."
Ordo you thinkthat the Scripturespeaksto no purpose:"He jealouslydesiresthe SpiritwhichHe has made to dwellin us"?
"But nowyour kingdomshall not endure.The LORDhas soughtout for Himself a manafter His own heart,and the LORDhas appointedhim as ruleroverHis people,becauseyou have not keptwhatthe LORDcommandedyou."
So Samuelsaidto him, "The LORDhas tornthe kingdomof Israelfrom you todayand has givenit to your neighbor,who is betterthanyou.
Then Samueltookthe hornof oiland anointedhim in the midstof his brothers;and the Spiritof the LORDcamemightilyupon Davidfrom that dayforward.And Samuelaroseand wentto Ramah.
Saullookedat Davidwith suspicionfrom that dayon.
Now SaultoldJonathanhis sonand allhis servantsto putDavidto death.But Jonathan,Saul'sson,greatlydelightedin David.
"For as longas the sonof Jesseliveson the earth,neitheryou noryour kingdomwill be established.Therefore now,sendand bringhim to me, for he mustsurelydie."
