Also [some of] the Hebrewscrossedthe Jordaninto the landof Gadand Gilead.But as for Saul,he [was] stillin Gilgal,and allthe peoplefollowedhim trembling.
I will setMy faceagainst you so that you will be struckdownbeforeyour enemies;and those who hateyou will ruleover you, and you will fleewhen nooneis pursuingyou.
"Then the officersshall speakfurtherto the peopleand say,Whois the manthat is afraidand fainthearted?Let him departand returnto his house,so that he might not make his brothers'heartsmeltlike his heart.'
"The LORDshall causeyou to be defeatedbeforeyour enemies;you will goout onewayagainstthem, but you will fleesevenwaysbeforethem, and you will be [an example of] terrorto allthe kingdomsof the earth.
"So we tookpossessionof thislandat that time.From Aroer,whichis by the valleyof Arnon,and halfthe hillcountryof Gileadand its citiesI gaveto the Reubenitesand to the Gadites.
and Gilead,and the territoryof the Geshuritesand Maacathites,and allMountHermon,and allBashanas faras Salecah;
With the other half-tribe, the Reubenitesand the Gaditesreceivedtheir inheritancewhichMosesgavethem beyondthe Jordanto the east,justas Mosesthe servantof the LORDgaveto them;
"Nowtherefore come,proclaimin the hearingof the people,saying,Whoeveris afraidand trembling,let him returnand departfrom MountGilead.'"So 22,000peoplereturned,but 10,000remained.
Now he waitedsevendays,according to the appointedtimesetby Samuel,but Samueldid not cometo Gilgal;and the peoplewere scatteringfrom him.
When Sauland allIsraelheardthesewordsof the Philistine,they were dismayedand greatlyafraid.
When the menof Israelwhowere on the othersideof the valley,with those whowere beyondthe Jordan,sawthat the menof Israelhad fledand that Sauland his sonswere dead,they abandonedthe citiesand fled;then the Philistinescameand livedin them.
