They said,"We seeplainlythat the LORDhas beenwith you; so we said,'Let there nowbe an oathbetweenus, [even] betweenyou and us, and let us makea covenantwith you,
Now it happenedafterwardsthat the kingof the Ammonitesdied,and Hanunhis sonbecamekingin his place.
Then Davidsaid,"I will showkindnessto Hanunthe sonof Nahash,justas his fathershowedkindnessto me." So Davidsentsomeof his servantsto consolehim concerninghis father.But when David'sservantscameto the landof the Ammonites,
Now when Davidhad cometo Mahanaim,Shobithe sonof Nahashfrom Rabbahof the sonsof Ammon,Machirthe sonof Ammielfrom Lo-debar,and Barzillaithe Gileaditefrom Rogelim,
Davidsentmessengersto the menof Jabesh-gilead,and saidto them, "May you be blessedof the LORDbecauseyou have shownthiskindnessto Saulyour lord,and have buriedhim.
[Ben-hadad] saidto him, "The citieswhichmy fathertookfrom your fatherI will restore,and you shall makestreetsfor yourself in Damascus,as my fathermadein Samaria."[Ahab said], "And I will letyou gowith this covenant."So he madea covenantwith him and lethim go.
When allJabesh-gileadheardallthat the Philistineshad doneto Saul,
allthe valiantmenaroseand tookaway the bodyof Sauland the bodiesof his sonsand broughtthem to Jabesh,and they buriedtheir bonesunderthe oakin Jabesh,and fastedsevendays.
"Will he makea covenantwith you? Will you takehim for a servantforever?
"You shall makenocovenantwith them or with their gods.
Do not listento Hezekiah,'for thussaysthe kingof Assyria,Makeyour peacewith me and comeout to me, and eateachof his vineand eachof his figtreeand drinkeachof the watersof his own cistern,
Likewise, alsoallthe Jewswhowere in Moaband among the sonsof Ammonand in Edomand whowere in allthe [other] countries,heardthat the kingof Babylonhad lefta remnantfor Judah,and that he had appointedoverthem Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikam,the sonof Shaphan.
and saidto him, "Are you wellawarethat Baalisthe kingof the sonsof Ammonhas sentIshmaelthe sonof Nethaniahto takeyour life?"But Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikamdid not believethem.
He tookone of the royalfamilyand madea covenantwith him, puttinghim under oath.He also tookaway the mightyof the land,
"NoAmmoniteor Moabiteshall enterthe assemblyof the LORD;noneof their [descendants], evento the tenthgeneration,shall everenterthe assemblyof the LORD,
The angerof the LORDburnedagainst Israel,and He soldthem into the handsof the Philistinesand into the handsof the sonsof Ammon.
It cameabout aftera whilethat the sonsof AmmonfoughtagainstIsrael.
And they said,"Whatoneis there of the tribesof Israelwhodid not comeup to the LORDat Mizpah?"And behold,noonehad cometo the campfrom Jabesh-gileadto the assembly.
"When you sawthat Nahashthe kingof the sonsof Ammoncameagainstyou, you saidto me, 'No,but a kingshall reignoverus,' although the LORDyour God[was] your king.
Now when Saulhad takenthe kingdomoverIsrael,he foughtagainst allhis enemieson everyside,against Moab,the sonsof Ammon,Edom,the kingsof Zobah,and the Philistines;and whereverhe turned,he inflictedpunishment.
