When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his skin disease? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me.”
But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?
and one of them, an expert in the law, asked him a question to test him.
Then they sent to him some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said.
They were watching him to see whether he would cure him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.
When he went outside, the scribes and the Pharisees became hostile to him and began to interrogate him about many things,
So they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be honest, in order to trap him by what he said and then to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.
And they were not able in the presence of the people to trap him by what he said, and being amazed by his answer they became silent.
But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him. They have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink until they kill him. They are ready now and are waiting for your consent.”
