As the people were filled with expectation and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,
This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
The Jews answered, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, though only a human, are making yourself God.”
“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but will tell you plainly of the Father.
They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all?
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets also died. Who do you claim to be?”
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
