and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”


And He was speaking about this openly. Then Kĕpha, taking Him aside, began to rebuke Him.


But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts about Yoḥanan, whether he was the Messiah or not,


Now this was the witness of Yoḥanan when the Yehuḏim sent from Yerushalayim priests and Lĕwites to ask him, “Who are you?”


Again the Yehuḏim picked up stones to stone Him.


The Yehuḏim answered Him, saying, “We do not stone You for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself Elohim.”


“These words I have spoken to you in figures of speech, but an hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I shall declare the Father plainly to you.


Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” And יהושע said to them, “Altogether that which I even say to you!


Are You greater than our father Aḇraham, who died? And the prophets died. Whom do You make Yourself?


His parents said this because they were afraid of the Yehuḏim, for the Yehuḏim had already agreed that if anyone confessed that He was Messiah, he should be put out of the congregation.


Having then such expectation, we use much boldness of speech,
