On July 20, American aviator Wally Funk, 82, became the oldest person to go to space. She set this record on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft during its suborbital flight.

With her experience, Funk broke the record that John Glenn set in 1998 at age 77 when flying on the Discovery Shuttle.
The commercial astronaut is the only member of the Mercury 13 group to have travelled to space.
Wally Funk has been known for making a career as the first female air safety inspector for the National Transportation Safety Board, first civilian flight instructor, and first female FAA inspector; however, her most notable achievement was being part of the Mercury 13 group who were female civilians physically comparable to the original astronauts who entered space.
Although Funk’s dream was flying into space, she could not do so due to the last test for the process being canceled.
But despite the odds, Funk continued making additional attempts efforts to reach her dream of getting into space come to pass,so, she applied as an astronaut in the 1970s and also made an attempt to become a Space Shuttle pilot.
But when Funk bought a ticket on Blue Origin, she got the chance to make her dream a reality. she soared into space alongside Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Jeff’s brother Mark and Oliver Daemen.
And it was an excited moment not only for her but also for Funk’s church, White’s Chapel United Methodist Church Funk because as it hosted their viewing of the launch in their church.
For many members, this was a great point of joy as they cheered, clapped, and nearly leaped from their pews as they watched their fellow church attendee fulfill her life goal.
“It’s like a family member, and we’re just so proud of her. It’s thrilling, you know — a lifelong dream. With all that she’s experienced and that she’s done and the spirit and attitude she’s had, what an inspiration she’s been to us all,” Rev. John McKellar, co-pastor at White’s Chapel told the Roys Report.
