What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.


And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.


And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.


And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’


So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”


And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.


for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.


The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.


And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.


And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.”


Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
