And it came to pass at the return of the year, at the time when kings go forth to war, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they spoiled the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabba: but David remained in Jerusalem.


Because he hath forsaken me, and hath adored Astarthe the goddess of the Sidonians, and Chamos the god of Moab, and Moloch the god of the children of Ammon: and hath not walked in my ways, to do justice before me, and to keep my precepts, and judgments as did David his father.


But Solomon worshipped Astarthe, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Moloch, the idol of the Ammonites.


The high places also that were at Jerusalem on the right side of the Mount of Offence, which Solomon king of Israel had built to Astaroth the idol of the Sidonians, and to Chamos the scandal of Moab, and to Melchom the abomination of the children of Ammon, the king defiled.


The men of Bethel and Hai, two hundred twenty-three.


Howl ye, for the day of the Lord is near: it shall come as a destruction from the Lord.


Howl, O gate: cry, O city. All Philistia is thrown down: for a smoke shall come from the north, and there is none that shall escape his troop.


The house is gone up, and Dibon to the high places, to mourn over Nabo: and over Medaba Moab hath howled. On all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard shall be shaven.


Therefore shall Moab howl to Moab: every one shall howl. To them that rejoice upon the brick walls, tell ye their stripes.


THE burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of the sea, for the house is destroyed, from whence they were wont to come: from the land of Cethim it is revealed to them.


Pass over the seas, howl, ye inhabitants of the island.


For this, gird yourselves with haircloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the Lord is not turned away from us.


The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, hath said: Behold, I will visit upon the tumult of Alexandria and upon Pharao and upon Egypt and upon her gods and upon her kings and upon Pharao upon them that trust in him.


There is no more rejoicing in Moab over Hesebon: they have devised evil. Come and let us cut it off from being a nation. Therefore shalt thou in silence hold thy peace, and the sword shall follow thee.


Moab is confounded, because he is overthrown. Howl ye and cry: tell ye it in Amen, that Moab is wasted.


For every head shall be bald and every beard shall be shaven: all hands shall be tied together and upon every back there shall be haircloth.


For because thou hast trusted in thy bulwarks and in thy treasures, thou also shalt be taken: and Chamos shall go into captivity, his priests, and his princes together.


Against the children of Ammon. Thus saith the Lord: Hath Israel no sons? Or hath he no heir? Why then hath Melchom inherited Gad, and his people dwelt in his cities?


Babylon is suddenly fallen, and destroyed: howl for her, take balm for her pain, if so she may be healed.


Gird thee with sackcloth, O daughter of my people, and sprinkle thee with ashes: make thee mourning as for an only son, a bitter lamentation, because the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.


And Melchom shall go into captivity, both he, and his princes together, saith the Lord.


And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.


Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl in your miseries, which shall come upon you.


And when Josue sent men from Jericho against Hai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of the town of Bethel, he said to them: Go up, and view the country. And they fulfilled his command, and viewed Hai.


And the Lord said to Josue: Fear not, nor be thou dismayed. Take with thee all the multitude of fighting men: arise and go up to the town of Hai. Behold, I have delivered into thy hand the king thereof, and the people, and the city, and the land.


And he burned the city, and made it a heap for ever.
