So Abram removing his tent came and dwelt by the vale of Mambre, which is in Hebron: and he built there an altar to the Lord.


In the place of the altar which he had made before. And there he called upon the name of the Lord.


He said to him: Take thy only begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision: and there thou shalt offer him for a holocaust upon one of the mountains which I will shew thee.


And they came to the place which God had shewn him, where he built an altar, and laid the wood in order upon it. And when he had bound Isaac his son, he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood.


And he built there an altar: and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent. And he commanded his servants to dig a well.


And raising an altar there, he invoked upon it the most mighty God of Israel.


In the mean time, God said to Jacob: Arise, and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau thy brother.


And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.


Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord had respect to Abel, and to his offerings.


Of all clean beasts take seven and seven, the male and female.


But of the beasts that are unclean two and two, the male and female. Of the fowls also of the air seven and seven, the male and the female: that seed may be saved upon the face of the whole earth.


And all living things, and cattle, and creeping things that creep upon the earth, according to their kinds, went out of the ark.


And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.


Moses said: Thou shalt give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, to the Lord our God.


And thou shalt offer the whole ram for a burnt offering upon the altar: it is an oblation to the Lord: a most sweet savour of the victim of the Lord.


And thou shalt take all from their hands, and shalt burn them upon the altar for a holocaust: a most sweet savour in the sight of the Lord, because it is his oblation.


An ox of the herd, and a ram, and a lamb of a year old for a holocaust:


I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercy of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing unto God, your reasonable service.


We have an altar, whereof they have no power to eat who serve the tabernacle.


Be you also as living stones built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.


But you are a chosen generation, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people: that you may declare his virtues, who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
