And he answered him: I lift up my hand to the Lord God the most high, the possessor of heaven and earth,


And said: I beseech you, my lords, turn in to the house of your servant, and lodge there: wash your feet, and in the morning you shall go on your way. And they said: No, but we will abide in the street.


So Abraham rose up in the morning, and taking bread and a bottle of water, put it upon her shoulder, and delivered the boy, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Bersabee.


Swear therefore by God, that thou wilt not hurt me, nor my posterity, nor my stock: but according to the kindness that I have done to thee, thou shalt do to me, and to the land wherein thou hast lived a stranger.


And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech: and both of them made a league.


So Abraham, rising up in the night, saddled his ass: and took with him two young men, and Isaac his son. And when he had cut wood for the holocaust, he went his way to the place which God had commanded him.


Jacob said: Swear therefore to me. Esau swore to him, and sold his first birthright.


And, behold, the same day the servants of Isaac came, telling him of a well which they had digged, and saying: We have found water.


Come therefore, let us enter into a league: that it may be for a testimony between me and thee.


But Laban arose in the night, and kissed his sons, and daughters, and blessed them: and returned to his place.


For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy.


And the men of Israel were joined together that day; and Saul adjured the people, saying: Cursed be the man that shall eat food till evening, till I be revenged of my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.


And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight; and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death.


And David said to him: Canst thou bring me to this company? And he said: Swear to me by God, that thou wilt not kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee to this company. And David swore to him.
