Now the enemies of Juda and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple to the Lord the God of Israel.


The king sent word to Reum Beelteem and Samsai the scribe, and to the rest that were in their council, inhabitants of Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, sending greeting and peace:


Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe wrote a letter from Jerusalem to king Artaxerxes, in this manner:


Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe and the rest of their counsellors, the Dinites, and the Apharsathacites, the Therphalites, the Apharsites, the Erchuites, the Babylonians, the Susanechites, the Dievites, and the Elamites:


The copy of the letter that Thathanai governor of the country beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and his counsellors the Arphasachites, who dwelt beyond the river, sent to Darius the king:


Now after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes, king of the Persians, Esdras the son of Saraias, the son of Azarias, the son of Helcias,


And they gave the king's edicts to the lords that were from the king's court, and the governors beyond the river. And they furthered the people and the house of God.


And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him, and I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. And I was as one languishing away before his face.


And Eliacim and Sobna and Joahe said to Rabsaces: Speak to thy servants in the Syrian tongue, for we understand it. Speak not to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people that are upon the wall.
