Perhaps thou hast taken counsel, to prepare thyself for battle. On whom dost thou trust, that thou darest to rebel?


In his days Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon came up, and Joakim became his servant three years. Then again he rebelled against him.


He also revolted from king Nabuchodonosor, who had made him swear by God. And he hardened his neck and his heart, from returning to the Lord the God of Israel.


(This is the copy of the letter, which they sent to him): To Artaxerxes the king, thy servants, the men that are on this side of the river, send greeting.


That search may be made in the books of the histories of thy fathers. And thou shalt find written in the records; and shalt know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to the kings and provinces, and that wars were raised therein of old time. For which cause also the city was destroyed.


And I commanded; and search hath been made. And it is found, that this city of old time hath rebelled against kings, and seditions and wars have been raised therein.


And at the same time came to them Thathanai, who was governor beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and their counsellors; and said thus to them: Who hath given you counsel to build this house, and to repair the walls thereof?


And we asked those ancients, and said to them thus: Who hath given you authority to build this house, and to repair these walls?


And they said to me: They that have remained, and are left of the captivity there in the province, are in great affliction and reproach: And the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and the gates thereof are burnt with fire.


It is reported amongst the Gentiles, and Gossem hath said it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel; and therefore thou buildest the wall and hast a mind to set thyself king over them. For which end


For the wrath of the Lord was against Jerusalem and against Juda, till he cast them out from his presence: and Sedecias revolted from the king of Babylon.


Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children as the bird doth her brood under her wings, and thou wouldest not?


We have found this to be a pestilent man, and raising seditions among all the Jews throughout the world, and author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.


From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves.
