And he turned, and built up the high places which Ezechias his father had destroyed. And he set up altars to Baal, and made groves, as Achab the king of Israel had done. And he adored all the host of heaven, and served them.


And he broke in pieces the statues, and cut down the groves: and he filled their places with the bones of dead men.


And the king commanded Helcias the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to cast out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven. And he burnt them without Jerusalem in the valley of Cedron: and he carried the ashes of them to Bethel.


But good works are found in thee, because thou hast taken away the groves out of the land of Juda, and hast prepared thy heart to seek the Lord the God of thy fathers.


And when these things had been duly celebrated, all Israel that were found in the cities of Juda went out. And they broke the idols, and cut down the groves, demolished the high places, and destroyed the altars, not only out of all Juda and Benjamin, but out of Ephraim also and Manasses, till they had utterly destroyed them. Then all the children of Israel returned to their possessions and cities.


And he turned, and built again the high places which Ezechias his father had destroyed. And he built altars to Baalim, and made groves; and he adored all the host of heaven, and worshipped them.


Thou shalt not adore their gods, nor serve them. Thou shalt not do their works: but shalt destroy them, and break their statues.


But destroy their altars, break their statues, and cut down their groves.


But if thou wilt answer me: We trust in the Lord our God; Is it not he whose high places and altars Ezechias hath taken away, and hath said to Juda, and Jerusalem: You shall worship before this altar?


I will destroy your high places, and break your idols. You shall fall among the ruins of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.


I was the mediator and stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you his words. For you feared the fire, and went not up into the mountain. And he said:


But thus rather shall you deal with them: Destroy their altars, and break their statues, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven things.


That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years. And thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar.


And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.
