And he made temples in the high places, and priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.


And he went up to the altar, which he had built in Bethel, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, which he had devised of his own heart. And he ordained a feast to the children of Israel: and went upon the altar to burn incense.


And when they had mourned over him, he said to his sons: When I am dead, bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones.


After these words Jeroboam came not back from his wicked way: but on the contrary he made of the meanest of the people priests of the high places. Whosoever would, he filled his hand: and he was made a priest of the high places.


And when they began to dwell there, they feared not the Lord: and the Lord sent lions among them, which killed them.


And every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the temples of the high places, which the Samaritans had made: every nation in their cities where they dwelt.


And when they worshipped the Lord, they served also their own gods according to the custom of the nations out of which they were brought to Samaria.


So these nations feared the Lord, but nevertheless served also their idols: their children also and grandchildren, as their fathers did, so do they unto this day.


Moreover all the temples of the high places, which were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord, Josias took away. And he did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel.


And they came to Zorobabel, and the chief of the fathers, and said to them: Let us build with you, for we seek your God as ye do. Behold, we have sacrificed to him, since the days of Asor Haddan king of Assyria, who brought us hither.


And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.
