And when he was gone, a lion found him in the way, and killed him. And his body was cast in the way; and the ass stood by him; and the lion stood by the dead body.


Then he said to him: Because thou wouldst not hearken to the word of the Lord, behold, thou shalt depart from me, and a lion shall slay thee. And when he was gone a little from him, a lion found him, and slew him.


And it was told the king of the Assyrians, and it was said: The nations which thou hast removed, and made to dwell in the cities of Samaria know not the ordinances of the God of the land. And the Lord hath sent lions among them: and, behold, they kill them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.


So one of the priests who had been carried away captive from Samaria, came and dwelt in Bethel; and taught them how they should worship the Lord.


And nevertheless they worshipped the Lord. And they made to themselves, of the lowest of the people, priests of the high places, and they placed them in the temples of the high places.


Unto this day they followed the old manner: they fear not the Lord, neither do they keep his ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and the commandment, which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he surnamed Israel:


So these nations feared the Lord, but nevertheless served also their idols: their children also and grandchildren, as their fathers did, so do they unto this day.


And looking back, he saw them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord: and there came forth two bears out of the forest, and tore of them two and forty boys.


For the waters of Dibon are filled with blood. For I will bring more upon Dibon: the lion upon them that shall flee of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land.


Who shall fear thee, O king of nations, for thine is the glory. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like unto thee.


And I will visit them with four kinds, saith the Lord: The sword to kill, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the air and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.


Wherefore a lion out of the wood hath slain them, a wolf in the evening hath spoiled them, a leopard watcheth for their cities: every one that shall go out thence shall be taken, because their transgressions are multiplied, their rebellions are strengthened.


And if I shall bring mischievous beasts also upon the land to waste it, and it be desolate so that there is none that can pass because of the beasts:


For thus saith the Lord: Although I shall send in upon Jerusalem my four grievous judgments, the sword and the famine and the mischievous beasts and the pestilence, to destroy out of it man and beast,


And I will send in upon you the beasts of the field, to destroy you and your cattle, and make you few in number: and that your highways may be desolate.


And he said to them: I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord the God of heaven, who made both the sea and the dry land.


The Lord hath put the river Jordan for a border between us and you, O ye children of Ruben, and ye children of Gad: and therefore you have no part in the Lord. And by this occasion you children shall turn away our children from the fear of the Lord. We therefore thought it best,
