And Moses, entering into the midst of the cloud, ascended the mountain. And he was there for forty days and forty nights.


And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.


Then the Lord said to Moses: "This word also, which you have spoken, I will do. For you have found grace before me, and I have known you by name."


Therefore, he was in that place with the Lord for forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread and he did not drink water, and he wrote on the tablets the ten words of the covenant.


"He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe in him.


And he said to me: 'Go forth and walk before the people, so that they may enter and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers that I would deliver to them.'


And so, I lay prostrate before the Lord for forty days and nights, as I humbly begged him, lest he destroy you, just as he had threatened to do.
