The sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, who came into Egypt, were seventy.


Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.


He said to Moses, “Come up to YHWH, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. Y’all are to worship from a distance.


Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up.


Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.


Thus said YHWH, “Go, and buy a clay jay from a potter and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests


Seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel stood before them. In the middle of them Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan stood, every man with his censer in his hand; and the smell of the cloud of incense went up.


Moses went out, and told the people YHWH’s words; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent.


Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.


After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them two by two ahead of him into every town and place where he was about to go.


The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!”


So I took the heads of y’all’s tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over y’all, leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and officers for y’all’s tribes.


You are to appoint judges and officers for all your town gates that YHWH your God gives you, according to your tribes. They are to judge the people with righteous judgment.


Y’all gather all the elders of y’all’s tribes and y’all’s officers to me, so that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them.
