They abandoned the house of YHWH, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols, so wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.


Your wickedness affects a person like you, and your righteousness may profit a son of man.


Moses said to Aaron and his sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Y’all must not let y’all’s hair hang loose or tear y’all’s clothes, so that y’all don’t die, and so that ʜᴇ will not be angry with the whole community. But y’all’s relatives, the whole house of Israel, may mourn the fire YHWH has kindled.


Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things like they did.


Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,


But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore YHWH’s anger burned against the children of Israel.


He made his household approach man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.


Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
