then God is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.’


He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life will see the light.’


You covered it with the deep as with a cloak. The waters stood above the mountains.


The mountains rose, the valleys sank down, to the place which you had assigned to them.


The cords of death surrounded me, the pains of Sheol got a hold of me. I found trouble and sorrow.


Hurry to answer me, YHWH. My spirit fails. Don’t hide your face from me, so that I don’t become like those who go down into the pit.


For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will you allow your faithful one to see decay.


The ropes of Sheol encircled me. The snares of death confronted me.


YHWH, you brought up my soul from Sheol. You kept me alive instead of going down to the pit.


“What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it declare your truth?


But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. The bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.


By your power, you form the mountains, having armed yourself with strength.


I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.


I said, “In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the rest of my years.”


Look, it was for my own welfare that I had great anguish, but in love you have delivered my soul from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back.


Who has measured the waters in the palm of ʜɪꜱ hand, or marked off the sky with spread of ʜɪꜱ fingers, or quantified the dust of the earth with a measuring basket, or weighed the mountains on a balance, or the hills on a pair of scales?


then I will bring you down with those who descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make you dwell in the lower parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, that you be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living.


to the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their stature, and don’t set their top among the thick boughs. Their mighty ones don’t stand up on their height, even all who drink water; for they are all delivered to death, to the lower parts of the earth, among the children of men, with those who go down to the pit.’


The mountains saw you, and were afraid. The storm of waters passed by. The deep roared and lifted up its hands on high.


He stood, and shook the earth. He looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains were crumbled. The age-old hills collapsed. His ways are eternal.


And I tell you that you are Peter. Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.


For a fire is kindled in my anger, that burns to the lowest Sheol, devours the earth with its increase, and sets the foundations of the mountains on fire.
