When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her, lay with her by force.


They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.


They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field,


They said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?”


the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.


The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves with many sorrows.


But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore YHWH’s anger burned against the children of Israel.


You must get up and consecrate the people. Say, ‘Y’all must consecrate yourselves* for tomorrow, for YHWH, the God of Israel, says, “There are devoted things among y’all, Israel. Y’all cannot stand before y’all’s enemies until y’all have removed the devoted thing from among y’all.”


When I saw among the plunder a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Look, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it.”
